5 Signs That You Need to Replace Your Siding

Siding installation isn’t exactly on top of most homeowners’ home improvement priorities. In fact, we often get hired to replace siding that’s in the later stages of its service life. But being a part of your home’s protective envelope, siding should always be in top condition, and therefore should be replaced as soon as it manifests the following signs.

Replace Your Siding

  1. Frequent repainting – House repainting is ideally done between 8 to 10 years. If the paint starts chipping, peeling, or cracking earlier than scheduled, there’s a fundamental problem with your siding and will have to be replaced. When you choose our steel siding options, you wouldn’t have to worry about repainting ever again, as they feature molded-in colors.

  2. High energy bills – There are several possible causes of increased heating and cooling requirements such as roof leaks or single-glaze windows, but if all of these are accounted for and your energy bill is still higher that what it used to be, then siding may be the culprit. Consider investing in insulated siding for improved energy efficiency.

  3. Rotting, warping, cracked, or loose siding – Deformed and loose siding can be easily spotted. Dry rot is slightly harder to detect, but you can take a pointed tool such as a screwdriver, and just poke and tap on some areas of the exterior. Siding is designed to withstand strong winds, so if pieces come loose with a simple tap, that’s another sign that you need a new siding installation.

  4. Mold and mildew – If your siding is starting to let moisture through the exterior walls, it increases your indoor humidity and encourages mold and mildew growth. Mold and mildew can start growing around cracks in the siding, which can later spread indoors. Do not let children near these growths as they can trigger allergies and respiratory problems.

  5. Your existing siding just doesn’t look good overall – Sometimes the siding may not have the above problems but would nevertheless look wrong. Perhaps the color has started to fade but not peel or blister, or perhaps warping is so minor yet it makes the exterior look a bit off. In any case, if the siding isn’t helping make your home look good, you may need new siding.
