4 Buying Tips For Energy-Efficient Windows

Share

Buying energy saving windows can be confusing if you don’t know what you’re looking for.  You might even end up with windows that aren’t right for your home. As a leading provider of energy-efficient replacement windows, we want to help you avoid such confusion by giving you the following tips in choosing your new windows:

Multiple Windows

1. Choose multiple-panel glass – Glass is a naturally conductive material, and single-panel glass facilitates thermal transfer, which translates to heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. This results in increased energy consumption. Dual-panel glass features an airspace that separates the interior and exterior surfaces, reducing thermal transfer. This airspace can also be filled with an optional inert gas like argon for enhanced insulation. Triple-panel windows are also available as a Simonton® Generations® replacement window option.

2. Low-E coatings protect you from sunlight – Low-E (low-emissivity) coatings block the heat from invisible infrared and UV rays. Compared to window tints, Low-E coatings are spectrally selective, meaning they block harmful invisible rays while letting through visible light. With energy saving windows, what you get is lots of natural light without increased heat or faded fabrics. Along with the Low-E coatings on our vinyl windows, Simonton replacement windows feature exclusive ProSolar® options that all meet ENERGY STAR® guidelines for energy efficiency.

3. Not all vinyl frames and sashes are the same – Vinyl window frames and sashes are known for their low-maintenance properties more than their energy efficiency, but with the right build, they can be on par with traditional wood and fiberglass frames. Our vinyl window frames employ insulated cores that complement the energy efficiency of our glass options.

4. Don’t forget the weatherstripping – Weatherstripping is not often discussed in replacement window literature, but it’s an essential part of an energy-efficient seal around operable windows. In addition to using only the best weatherstripping materials and proper installation techniques, we cover the installation with our 10-year workmanship guarantee.
